Since Ashton wasn't gonna be an heir he was taking up space and time in the household so he moved in with his grandparents, Kate's mum and dad.

Lou is an outgoing social butterfly.

It wasn't only Lou who grew older. So did Gunner and later on Kate. They both grew into adults. Gunner wanted to take the relationship to the next level but the pair had not interacted in ages cause of their work responsibilities and aspirations, so their romantic and friendly relationships were down a bit. In fear of dying of embarrassment Gunner tried to woo Kate a bit.
